Description
These ants are so small that I didn't realize they were actually ants until I was able to see them through the 5X magnification of the lens. Even so, this is a tight crop from a much larger photo. It took a lot of luck and a number of wasted photos to get the ant in sharp focus. They are called "crazy ants" because they tend to wander around rather than follow in a line like most ants. Also, they are (for reasons unknown) attracted to high-voltage electrical lines. The ants chew through the insulation and then get electrocuted. the dead ant puts out a distress pheromone, which attracts more ants, which also get electrocuted - putting out more pheromones, attracting more ants, etc. Makes for a big mess.
